19 Saturday, July

Orion Centre, Campsie

Donna Parker masterclass for young organists.  In conjunction with TOSA

No time given

TOSA has asked Donna if she would like to give a masterclass for young organists. She has run academies and workshops for young organists. OMSS will be working with TOSA on this event. The date would be Saturday 19th July, probably the morning, at the Orion Theatre in Campsie. Do you have a student who might like the opportunity to present a theatre organ piece. We're not looking for anything intricate, but something cheerful and melodious, so that Donna can aid by advising on registrations, use of different manuals etc. Even a simple piece can go a long way. I have a lot of music if you need some . . .

Everyone is invited to attend, young and old, and there will be a tour through the organ afterwards.

The limit would probably be six to eight students depending on their chosen pieces. Would you please let me know if one of your students might like to give this a go? We know that they all enjoyed the Silent Movies at the Academy (as did we all)!

Please contact Godelieve Ghavalas (Home: (02) 9871-0825 M: 0404-837-363) to register.

Donna Parker
Having played and studied organs from the age of seven, Donna began her classical instruction at age thirteen with Richard Purvis, then Organist and Choirmaster of San Francisco's Grace Cathedral. She made her first recording at fifteen, was appointed the first Official Organist for the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball organization and performed concerts for a major electronic organ manufacturer. After college she played at the Organ Stop Pizza in Phoenix and later at the Roaring Twenties restaurant in Grand Rapids Michigan. She opened as featured organist at the Paramount Music Palace in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1979 and was a featured organist there for over ten years, performing daily on the 4/42 Wurlitzer. For several years she was also Staff Organist in Vancouver, Washington at Uncle Milt's Pipe Organ Pizza until it closed in 1999.

She performed regularly at the Organ Grinder restaurant in Portland and at Uncle Milt's Pipe Organ Pizza restaurant in Vancouver, Washington. In 1996, Donna was named "Organist of the Year" by the American Theatre Organ Society. Donna now serves as Music Director and Organist at Piedmont Presbyterian Church in Portland, and as Associate Organist at First United Methodist Church in Portland with Jonas Nordwall.

She has conducted master classes nationally and abroad, and has worked with public school districts to incorporate this art form into their music history curriculum. In 1996 Donna was honoured by being named Organist of the Year by the American Theatre Organ Society. She was elected to serve on the international board of directors of the ATOS for six years, where she headed the scholarship committee that assisted students studying theatre organ.
