The King of Instruments with John Hanna

The Organ Music Society's very own hour-long radio programme, which goes to air 5pm on the second Saturday of the month on Fine Music Sydney, 102.5FM.

Our program at 5pm on Saturday 9 July 2022 will feature the following items:

 
1.         Richard Wagner, arr. Lemare – Overture to “Die Meistersinger.” 1834 Hill organ of the Birmingham Town Hall (rebuilt 1984), played by Thomas Trotter.
 
2.         Johann Rinck, ed. W. T. Best – Flute Concerto, Op. 55, No. 182. 1927 Casavant organ of St Andrew’s Lutheran Church, Mahtomedi, Minnesota, played by Thomas Heywood:
(i)   Allegro maestoso
(ii)  Adagio
(iii) Rondo
 
3.         Joseph Rheinberger – Cantilena from Sonata No. 11 in D minor, Op. 148. Organ of the Cadet’s Chapel, Westpoint, NJ, played by Daniel Chorzempa.
 
4.         Noel Rawsthorne – Dance Suite. 1818 Henry Lincoln organ of the Buckingham Palace Ballroom (originally built for the Brighton Pavilion), played by Joseph Nolan:
(i)   March – On Ilkley Moor
(ii)  Dancing Feet
(iii) Waltz
(iv) Danse des Papillons
(v)  Line Dance
 
5.         Eugène Gigout – Grand Choeur Dialogué. Organ of the Cadet’s Chapel, Westpoint, NJ, played by Daniel Chorzempa.

The St John’s organ, installed in 1863, is considered to be of national significance and is one of the most substantial and best-preserved JW Walker organs of its period.

Join us in the lead up to the St John’s 220th Anniversary for three very special organ recitals featuring our own home-grown organists.

Tuesday 19 July, 1pm: Terrence Maelaua
Saturday 23 July, 1pm: Nicholas Morley
Sunday 24 July, 1pm: David Osborne

Entry is free. The Cathedral will be open for tours from midday.

2.30pm - St Francis, Paddington

The soloist will be Titus Grenyer. His programme will feature Bach's Prelude & Fugue in 'C' BWV 547, the first sonata by Alexandre Guilmant and works by Felix Sweelinck and Edward Elgar. Also in this recital will be motets and anthems by English composers (Blow, Battishill, Noble, Bainton, Howells and Britten) sung by St Francis Chorale with organ accompaniment played by Brett McKern.
