Christie 2/10, 1932 Theatre Organ

Instrument History

The Christie Theatre Organ located in the Epping Baptist Church was the first built in Australia by Hill, Norman and Beard from imported parts. It was installed in the Duke of York Theatre at Eastwood and opened in 1932. From 1940 to 1949 the organ was silent and was eventually sold to the church (less the percussions) in 1957 for $1,500.

The organ slowly deteriorated over the years until Robert Gliddon, John Andrews, and David Bruce decided to restore and improve it. New chambers were built. The console rebuild gave it an electric action for the stop rail and a new electronic system (by John Andrews) which replaced the relays.

As time passed, the percussions were gradually replaced, the stop list has been revised and improved and the pipes have been tonally revoiced and regulated.
