Eugene Lavery was born in Palmerston North in 1985. His musical training began when he was appointed Organ Scholar at Nelson Cathedral in 1997. In 2001 he participated in the Dame Gillian Weir Masterclass in Christchurch. In 2002 he passed Grade 8 (Associated Board) in Organ with Distinction, and was placed 2nd in the NZ Association of Organists Performance Awards. His organ tutor at the time was Andrew Cantrill of The Wellington Cathedral of St. Paul.

Eugene left Nelson in 2003 to take up the position of Belinda Godfrey Memorial Organ Scholar at The Auckland Cathedral of The Holy Trinity and to study for a Bachelor of Music degree in Organ Performance at Auckland University with Dr John Wells. Whilst at the University Eugene has featured in numerous concerts and has also pursued studies in Harpsichord and Conducting.

In 2004 Eugene was Organist for Stainer’s Crucifixion and Fauré’s Requiem presented by the Cathedral Choir and was also the Guest Recitalist for the celebrated George Mason Organ Concert Series in New Plymouth.

This year Eugene will complete his Bachelor of Music Degree and will further his studies in Organ, Harpsichord, Conducting, and Singing.
