June

Queen's Birthday Ramble to Bathurst and Mudgee

Sunday 9th and Monday 10th June 2002

Arranged by Andrew Davidson, Vice President

The Society's next Organ Ramble is to be held on the Queen's Birthday weekend in June in the Bathurst and Mudgee regions of NSW. Bathurst is some 3 to 4 hours by road from Sydney and so that we can see as many organs on the Monday holiday, we have arranged for the Ramble to commence late on Sunday afternoon with a recital at All Saints Anglican Cathedral Bathurst at 5pm. The recitalist will be Tim Roberton, Organ Scholar at St James Anglican Church, King Street Sydney. Following the recital at approximately 6pm, the Cathedral authorities have generously arranged a reception at Bishopscourt for Ramble attendees. Following the reception, we will return to the Cathedral so that attendees can try the organ. Ramble attendees should arrange their own accommodation in one of Bathurst's many motels which are all conveniently located.

We will visit two organs on Monday morning in the Bathurst area before setting off to Mudgee for lunch. The drive to Mudgee via Sofala is approximately ninety minutes and passes through some picturesque countryside.

The full program on Monday will be as follows:

08.45 Uniting Church, William Street Bathurst (tea & coffee will be provided)

10.15 Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Kelso

13.45 St John's Anglican Church, Church & Market Streets, Mudgee

A participation fee of $20 per person will help the Society in defraying some of the costs associated with arranging the weekend. For those attending on Monday only, the fee will be $15.

IMPORTANT

To assist the Cathedral authorities with catering arrangements, please advise Andrew Davidson (Phone 9489 6774 or 0414385311 or email ad046@hotmail.com) by Wednesday 5th June if you will be attending the Sunday evening recital and Reception

Jonathan Ambrosino (USA), Stephen Bicknell (UK) and Peter Jewkes (Australia)

AN EVENING WITH TWO OF THE WORLD'S FOREMOST ORGAN AUTHORITIES

This is a special opportunity to meet historians Jonathan Ambrosino from the USA and Stephen Bicknell from the UK. The evening will be presented in conjunction with the Organ Historical Trust of Australia at St. Paul's, where the notable 1890 Davidson organ is being restored.

Jonathan Ambrosino is a freelance writer on the organ and a consultant who continues to work on organ voicing and tonal finishing. He has been president of the Organ Historical Society, and is an expert in the history of the 20th Century organ in America, and in the influence of English builders Willis, T.C. Lewis and Carlton Mitchell on the work of the important Skinner and Aeolian-Skinner firms.

Stephen Bicknell is probably best known in Australia for his acclaimed book The History of the English Organ. His distinguished career in organ building included working with such firms as N.P. Mander and J.W. Walker & Sons before pursuing a career as a freelance writer, designer and consultant. He is also a lecturer in organ history at the Royal Academy of Music in London. Two of his witty articles have been reprinted in past issues of The Sydney Organ Journal.

Both are excellent speakers, with forthright and often controversial views.

To add even greater interest, a slightly unusual approach to the evening will be adopted, described by Jonathan Ambrosino :

Adopting a slightly non-scholarly format, moderator Peter Jewkes will host six English and American organ personalities from times past (William Hill, T.C. Lewis, Robert Hope-Jones, George Ashdown Audsley, Ernest M. Skinner, G. Donald Harrison) - or, at least, as visiting historians Stephen Bicknell and Jonathan Ambrosino will attempt to portray them.

Topics will centre around the creation, re-creation and preservation of style, and the often slippery grasp of understanding such things in the first place. In addition to commercial breaks and the possibility of sly costume changes, Peter Jewkes will demonstrate the church's Davidson organ (restoration in process) and lead the gathered in song. Supper follows.
