Sunday 9th and Monday 10thJune 2002
Arranged by Andrew Davidson, Vice President
The Society's next Organ Ramble is to beheld on the Queen's Birthday weekend in June in the Bathurst andMudgee regions of NSW. Bathurst is some 3 to 4 hours by road fromSydney and so that we can see as many organs on the Monday holiday,we have arranged for the Ramble to commence late on Sunday afternoonwith a recital at All Saints Anglican Cathedral Bathurst at 5pm.The recitalist will be Tim Roberton, Organ Scholar at St JamesAnglican Church, King Street Sydney. Following the recital atapproximately 6pm, the Cathedral authorities have generously arrangeda reception at Bishopscourt for Ramble attendees. Following thereception, we will return to the Cathedral so that attendees cantry the organ. Ramble attendees should arrange their own accommodationin one of Bathurst's many motels which are all conveniently located.
We will visit two organs on Monday morningin the Bathurst area before setting off to Mudgee for lunch. Thedrive to Mudgee via Sofala is approximately ninety minutes andpasses through some picturesque countryside.
The full program on Monday will be as follows:
08.45 Uniting Church, William Street Bathurst (tea & coffee will be provided)
10.15 Holy Trinity AnglicanChurch, Kelso

Jonathan Ambrosino(USA), Stephen Bicknell (UK) and Peter Jewkes (Australia)
AN EVENING WITH TWO OF THE WORLD'SFOREMOST ORGAN AUTHORITIES
This is a special opportunity to meet historians JonathanAmbrosino from the USA and Stephen Bicknellfrom the UK. The evening will be presented in conjunction withthe Organ Historical Trust of Australia at St. Paul's, where thenotable 1890 Davidson organ is being restored.
Jonathan Ambrosino is a freelance writer on theorgan and a consultant who continues to work on organ voicingand tonal finishing. He has been president of the Organ HistoricalSociety, and is an expert in the history of the 20th Century organin America, and in the influence of English builders Willis, T.C.Lewis and Carlton Mitchell on the work of the important Skinnerand Aeolian-Skinner firms.
Stephen Bicknell is probably best known in Australiafor his acclaimed book The History of the English Organ. His distinguished career in organ building included working withsuch firms as N.P. Mander and J.W. Walker & Sons before pursuinga career as a freelance writer, designer and consultant. He isalso a lecturer in organ history at the Royal Academy of Musicin London. Two of his witty articles have been reprinted in pastissues of The Sydney Organ Journal.
Both are excellent speakers, with forthright and often controversialviews.
To add even greater interest, a slightly unusual approach tothe evening will be adopted, described by Jonathan Ambrosino :
Adopting a slightly non-scholarly format, moderator Peter Jewkeswill host six English and American organ personalities from timespast (William Hill, T.C. Lewis, Robert Hope-Jones, George AshdownAudsley, Ernest M. Skinner, G. Donald Harrison) - or, at least,as visiting historians Stephen Bicknell and Jonathan Ambrosinowill attempt to portray them.
Topics will centre around the creation,re-creation and preservation of style, and the often slipperygrasp of understanding such things in the first place. In additionto commercial breaks and the possibility of sly costume changes,Peter Jewkes will demonstrate the church's Davidson organ (restorationin process) and lead the gathered in song. Supper follows.
