Anne Richardson is a passionate vocal artist and has performed in a wide range of styles during her musical journey. Blessed with a rich, natural voice, she exercised it at family and church gatherings as a child. She later fronted a rock'n'roll cover band around Sydney, learning the craft of performance in the forge of live gigging. Then came a dramatic pivot - she challenged herself to enter the demanding arena of amateur opera and music theatre. Her raw enthusiasm and zest were enhanced with technical skills and stagecraft discipline. She has performed at private functions (including a selection of Wagner arias at a remembrance service) and recorded several original vocal electronic songs.

Anne's passion now is to develop as a mature and emotive soprano, sharing her joy of singing with appreciative audiences. She explores nuance, expression, and emotion through art songs. This performance has been the focus of preparations for many months, and some of that journey has been documented by Anne's vocal coach and singing teacher, Kathleen Connell: https://kathleenconnell.com.au/how-to-develop-a-performers-mindset-by-finding-your-own-singing-opportunities/

Alison Cameron has over 35 years of experience as a freelance pianist, accompanist and harpsichordist in Australia, Italy, Germany and the United Kingdom. She has worked extensively as an Associate Artist for recordings, broadcasts, recitals, examinations, and national and international competitions. Alison also worked as an opera répétiteur, choral and instrumental conductor, director and rehearsal pianist for musicals, and an eisteddfod adjudicator.

Alison has been a Piano teacher, Musicianship teacher and Accompanist at Ascham School for 30 years, including 10 years as Head of Keyboard. As a classroom music teacher, she has taught students from Year 3 to Year 12 in both Australia and the United Kingdom. She also teaches piano and musicianship to all ages and levels in her private studio.

Sophia Hillier is currently studying at Newtown High School of the Performing Arts. She is a dedicated multi-instrumentalist (playing Cello, Alto Saxophone, Soprano Saxophone, Piano and Oboe). She holds the position of First Oboe in the Peter Seymour Orchestra and is in demand as a cello accompanist for HSC students in their final examinations. Sophia also performs as part of ensembles in musicals, concerts and recordings.

The Programme

Our French programme is a curated selection of songs which explore the concept of love and many of its manifestations. Melancholia, mystery and passion are portrayed in these works which span the great period of French chanson, opera, art and design and poetry from the late Nineteenth Century to mid twentieth century.
In choosing these works, Anne was keen to blend familiar French chanson with less well-known (but thematically appropriate) repertoire. Jules Massenet is best-known as an operatic composer, but he also gifted the world a range of arias and art songs, some of which make up the core of the programme.

Amoureuse talks to the suffocating pressure of obsessive, protective love. Nuit de Espagne depicts the warm nights as a backdrop to mysterious in Spain. Musette tells of the heady spirit of young love. Elegie seeks the memory of lost love and is warmed by Sophia's cello accompaniment. Faure's Au Bord De L'eau tells of being in love yet detached from the real world and its tensions. Poulenc's Les chemins de l'amour describes the philosophy of love. Satie's Je Te Veux celebrates the intensity and immediacy of wanting someone. Kosmo's Les Feuilles Mortes (Autumn Leaves) speaks to the afterglow of memory when love has long since passed.

The accompaniment: To bring some sonic variety, Sophia was invited to play the cello in Massenet's Elegie as a warm counterpoint to Anne's voice. Unifying all of this are the supremely beautiful piano accompaniments, where Alison delivers the perfect foundation for the lead melodies.
