"Lost Sounds"

A programme devoted to the sounds of two organs which have since been
radically altered through rebuilding, and whose present-day sounds no
longer resemble those of past recordings.

* the 1929 Hill, Norman and Beard organ at Melbourne Town Hall. Now just
the pipework of this instrument survives, incorporated into a much larger
new instrument by an American firm, opened in May this year.

HOLLINS - A Trumpet Minuet
MOZART - Church Sonata in D (K 144)
GRAINGER - Colonial Song
DIGGLE - A Song of Sunshine
COCKER - Tuba Tune

(all these items played by Thomas Heywood, recorded in 1992)

* the organ of Gloucester Cathedral, which was controversially reduced in
size in the early 1970s with removal of 20th-century additions.

ELGAR - Sonata No 1 in G major (Op. 28)

The 1966 recording by Herbert Sumsion, widely regarded as the "benchmark"
recorded interpretation of this work.
