Exploring the history of one of Sydney's finest organs

This unique 'behind the scenes' tour will give you an insight into the inner workings of one of Sydney's oldest, and finest, pipe organs. After an illustrated talk by an organ specialist, you'll be able to hear the tubular-pneumonic parts in action as an experienced organist plays your requests.

Pipe organs are big, grand and mysterious. How do they make that booming sound? Why are there so many keys and peddles? Come and experience all the stops and valves on Pitt Street Uniting Church's organ. Designed and built by Hill and Sons in 1910, it is the little sister to the Sydney Town Hall organ, which was designed by the same English firm.

Darrell Pitchford, a specialist in organ restoration and maintenance, will give an illustrated presentation about the inner workings of this 118-year-old beauty. Then young organist, Marlowe Fitzpatrick, will show you how he manipulates all the stops, valves, peddles and parts to fill the church with music. While we are serving afternoon tea, those who can climb stairs and don't mind confined spaces will be led on a behind-the-scenes tour of the organ's innards.

This event will give you a new understanding of organ music and you'll be able to impress your friends with your understanding of tubular-pneumomics!
