5.00pm - 6.00pm Fine Music FM Organ Music Society Radio Program 102.5MHz

"Society Spot" is the Organ Music Society's very own hour-long radio programme, which goes to air at 5pm on the second Saturday of the month on Fine Music Sydney, 102.5FM.  It is presented by Society member John Hanna.  It can be heard live, or streamed online by going to Fine Music Sydney's website here https://finemusicsydney.com/

It can also be heard on demand here https://finemusicsydney.com/programs/

Our “Society Spot” radio program on Fine Music Sydney (102.5 FM) at 5 pm on Saturday 8 May 2021 will feature a small selection of the large number of organs to be found in the Scottish capital Edinburgh.

Some of the instruments have been much interfered with over the years, but there are notable exceptions, including the 1757 Snetzler organ and the fine Lewis instrument which concludes the program.

We’ll hear the following works on the organs shown:

  • March from “Ode to Saint Cecilia’s Day” (Handel) - McEwan Hall (Hope-Jones, 1897, much rebuilt)
  • Concerto in G, BWV 592 (Bach) – Movements 1 and 3 – St Cuthbert’s Church (Hope-Jones, 1899, much rebuilt)
  • Voluntary (Walond) – Lodge Canongate Kilwinning (Snetzler, 1757)
  • Angel Scene from “Hansel and Gretel” (Humperdinck, trans. Lemare) – St Mary’s Episcopal Cathedral (Willis, 1879, revoiced)
  • Fantaisie in E flat (Saint-Saens) – St Stephen’s Church Centre (Willis, 1880)
  • Variations on an Original Theme (Hesse) – St Andrew’s and St George’s Church (Wells-Kennedy, 1984)
  • Sonata No. 4 in B flat (Mendelssohn) – Broughton St Mary’s (Lewis, 1882
